How UK invented biscuits and established globally
Hello and welcome to my first post of our blog!!!
Here we're gonna see some interesting facts(a product that we consume daily) in my first post.
Origin of Biscuits
In
my country, elders usually carry biscuits whenever they visit their
relatives. Even diabetes patients consult themselves towards biscuit,
which is enriched in high-fibre. It shows that biscuits have made a
major impact on our daily life. Regardless of age, biscuits are favoured
by everyone. Have you ever imagined how it was originated?
Okay, before we get deeper into it, I wanna share some interesting facts that I found while doing my research. Prepare to be baked!
- The biscuit was invented before World War I
- The inventor of the biscuit served under Queen Victoria, though he owns his factory.
- Biscuits were found to be one of the favorite consumables for sailors.
- The UK nearly had about 30% of exports share in biscuits.
- The inventor was also the first person to bake biscuits using steam concepts that we use today.
Invention process
Without
any surprise or facts who I used to call as the father of biscuits
"Jonathan Dodgson Carr" invented biscuit. He worked as an apprentice in
the bakery where he also qualified as a professional baker. Carr, during
his leisure time he turned his side of interest towards baking. Due to
his interest, he held a breakthrough in baking, named biscuits. With his
invention, he sold them in his father's grocery shop. Like today, then
biscuit was not made out of Atta or Maida, they were made from pulses
and it had a structure of hard and crispy on the outside and
soft-like-cake on the inside. The steam engine was invented late back in
the 1600s and biscuit was invented in 1830.
Later in 1834, he established his own company to manufacture his invention and named his company after his family name "carr&co". As i mentioned before, he served under Queen Victoria and he was the first person to bake biscuits using machinery. Out of his various baking process, he successfully came down with "four different flavours". To get a wide range of attention for his invention he used some of his sailor friends as sales person which made the other sailors be a part of it and also it became an enjoyable breakfast and evening snacks. As time flew by, the company had around 90 employees and manufactured weighing around 400 tonnes of biscuits which is approximately equal to the 432 newborn elephants. He also believed in, "Learning leads towards success". To prove that, he opened a library within the factory,

After his demise in 1884, he had three sons eldest son named, Henry Carr,
second son James Carr, and last son Thomas Carr took over his father's
legacy and he went through a marvellous growth in Carr factory. Within a
year, the company had almost 128 flavours of biscuits for sale in 1885.
In 1894, the company was well established with almost 1000 employees
and 300 different flavours under their belt. After their tremendous
reach, during the same year, the family-owned company enter the market
of public share. Henry was considered to be one of the successful
managers in history. After his passing in 1904, Theodore, the
grandson of Jonathan Carr and son of Thomas took his uncle's position.
At that time he owned 3000 employees and he also reduced the working
hours of an employee's from 47 hrs to 45 hrs without deduction in pay.
In 1919, the estimated value of Carr&Co was about 600,000 euros.
In
the history of Carr&Co, in the year 1964 a company named
"CAVENHAM", founded by "Goldsmith" (1933-1997) acquired Carr&co for
around 1.2 million in euro. In 1948, Goldsmith started his enterprises
by hearing the success story of Carr's family from his well-known
sailor. During World War I the UK also received orders from the
US for their soldiers, where they use to consume it with water whenever
they like. Since it requires less space, this leads the soldiers free
from starvation. After the war, the UK almost owned 30% of export
shares.
Goldsmith tripled the profit of biscuits via advertising it on television. Around 1983 lily was the one who baked biscuits using flours this made the biscuit easy to eat. During 1952 KFC where they use to serve biscuits with French fries which made famous among the common people in the US. The descendant of Carr's family, Ian carr(1929-2004) praised that, goldsmith built the biscuit empire "In a way the world wanted him to". Till today there are two flavours available in the market which was the procreation of Jonathan Carr. He also added, In honouring the memory of his ancestor, Jonathan Dodgson Carr, he ate the very first two flavours in his entire life.
NOTE:
Goldbar and Carr's water biscuits were the name of the first two
flavoured biscuits, which is still available in the market.
