Most Underrated Bizzare and Weirdest Nobel Prize and Winners of The 21st Century

The World has provided numerous extraordinary minds and their astonishing discoveries/ inventions, that changed the face of the world we have seen. Their efforts and talents were praised, recognised and awarded by many awarding committee's. One among them is the World's Most Prestigious Award "Nobel Prize" by Swedish and Norwegian committee. From its inaugural 1901, Major great minds have won Nobel Prize and among them there are some who were less famous unlike Albert Einstein but their discoveries were well known and some laureate made us to rise our brows by thinking What!

In this we will see about the most underrated, bizzare and weirdest Nobel Prize Winners of the  21st century whose inventions/services are more familiar but not the inventors/activists.

UNDERRATED

Jack S. Kilby, Nobel Prize in Physics 2000, The Invention of Integrated Circuits

People with engineering background have known about transistors, resisters, capacitors which was widely used for amplification of signal in electrical and communications. But, the combination of them with smaller in size is called Integrated Circuits, was invented by Jack Kilby with Robert Noyce. The combination of transistor, resister and capacitor in a semiconductor board creates Integrated Circuits. The goal of these two, an Electrical Engineering and a Physicist, is to create a device that provides less occupying space without compromising the efficiency of the TRC(Quick turnaround) combined and thus, IC was invented.

Yoshinori Ohsumi, Nobel Prize in Medicine 2016, Discovery of The Autophagy Cell Mechanism

Every human beings who lived and living had, has and have been concerned about how they look from tip to toe. Especially those who are oversized, the dieting and fasting have provided a tremendous results in weight loss. The mechanism of autophagy is an essential part in weight loss routine and was unknown untill 1990s, it works when we fast for 16 hours a day without any food but water and consume healthy foods between 8 hours of the same day and widely known as Intermediate Fasting. His ground breaking research found that a cell named Autophagy present in our liver will start to breakdown the unused proteins during the 16 hour fasting and flushes out the toxic. This research laid foundation for better understanding of the ability of cells to manage malnutrition and infections, causes of certain neurological diseases and cancer.

Peter Arge, Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2003, Discovery of The Water Channel in Human Body

Urination, a part of the excretion process to flush out the waste in our body. The major organ that does this was the kidney, it separates the water molecules from our intake and excretes the remaining as urination. To achieve this a protein named aquaporin(water channel) was founded in the kidneys which detaches the water particles as it sees fit. This protein presence was founded by Peter Arge which he proved its a sought-after water canal, a water channel that allows the passage of water and not the other substances through the surface layer of the cells that comprise organisms.

Mohamed ElBaradei, Nobel Peace Prize 2005, Proliferation of Nuclear Arms Must Be Stopped

During World War II, the nuclear energy was weaponized and used against one country's foe causing a devestating effect over the world and etched an impact in us. Passing five decades after World War II, An Egyptian Doctorate in Law, Mohamed ElBaradei was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts on stopping the use of Nuclear energy in military and to ensure that nuclear energy for civil and peaceful purposes is used in the safest way possible. He took the post of Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and elected for the third time when he received the Nobel Prize.

John C. Mather & George F. Smoot, Nobel Prize in Physics 2006, Discovery of The Anisotropy of The Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation

When we hear the word cosmology, the first thing that comes to our mind was the creation of universe and black hole. In theory they played combined/respective parts on creating the universe that are explained under "The Big Bang Theory". Both Scientists are an American Astrophysicist and a Cosmologist that worked on the Cosmic Background Explorer Satellite (COBE) which is an exceptional work and was also rightly reasoned by the Nobel Committee and says, their work provided the very necessary information in the physics of cosmology to cement the big bang theory. The COBE project can also be regarded as the starting point for cosmology as a precision science.

AndreGrem and Konstatin Novoselov, Noble Prize in Physics 2010, Successful Extraction for two-dimensional material- Graphene

Investing less than a dollar and earning over a million is an achievement beyond dream for many entrepreneurs, AndreGrem and  Konstatin Novoselov have done that and won a Nobel Prize as bonus or vice versa. They have extracted two dimensional (2D) of graphene using a scotch tape and a pencil which costs less than a dollar and won a Nobel Prize for Physics and a Million for life.

Graphene is an another form of carbon. We all know the importance of carbon and at extreme pressure for years it turns into diamonds. But, the material researcher gave an unknown importance in a different angle, as it is made up of carbon it can also be used to conduct electricity by doping it with plastics.

All they did was to drop a flakes of graphite in the tape, then they just stitched back the tape at different lengths for about 10 to 20 times. Finally they extracted the Graphene layer and looked under the microscope (looked like the image below). For more technical details refer this research document.

This research was performed on 2004 followed by a paper in 2005 and then being recognized for the noble prize in 2010. Graphene can be used for,

  • Transparent and fold-able phones
  • Faster than the silicon transistor we use today which means faster computer.
  • A battery can be recharged in seconds.
  • It's lighter than the Helium and it goes on a way long.

Joseph Rotblat, Noble Peace Price 1995, Diminishing The Part Played by Nuclear in Army and Geo-politics

An atom can be split and combined together to generate greater energy for power source and thus it lead to Nuclear Weapons and played a vital role in the Geo-politics.

Joseph Rotblat who was a polish physicists later settled in United Kingdom after receiving the noble prize for his efforts in diminishing the nuclear energy played in international politics. For 52 years he stood against the new development of mass destruction since Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The  bizarre is that he was awarded the noble peace prize in 1995. You can still search for his research online.

Guglielmo Marconi, Noble Prize for Physics in 1909, Development of Wireless Telegraph Signal

In 1923 Guglielmo Marconi who discovered, transmission of data could be done possible through wireless short wave technology.

He was the first person to figure out the presence of low entropy signals in earth. Later, with the help of this signal he started to transmit data between two cities.  If Marconi would not had invented those signal transmissions we will be in a world full of wires and we cannot even imagine how much cable is required to launch  satellite in LEO (Low Earth Orbit) 36000kms of wire at the very least. We still be talking over the match boxes like we were in igloos.

BIZARRE

Barack Obama, Nobel Peace Prize 2009, Strengthening International Diplomacy and cooperation between people's

The Coolest American President Ever, Mr. Barack Obama, a two term president have won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009 for his efforts to strengthen the international diplomacy by resolving the most difficult diplomatic affairs and forming a cooperation between the people's in-order to maintain unity. The efforts he put in creating an awareness about the climate change made the Norwegian committee to endorse the Obama's appeal "Now is the time for all of us to take our shared responsibility for a global response to global changes". The bizarre is that a lot of controversial speculation have happened when he was elected for Nobel and he himself admitted that, he wasn't truly deserving the award.

Bob Dylan, Nobel Prize in Literature 2016, Creating New Poetic Expressions in American Song Tradition

Bon Dylan is a famous singer, musical songwriter who portrayed the political issues and the chronicle social through songs. When he was announced as an laureate for Nobel Prize in Literature it does created a commotion mainly because of the 1st songwriter to win a Nobel. Many novelist shared their opinion over this and most of them were controversial. Irvine Welsh, a Scottish Novelist said "I'm a Dylan fan, but this is an ill conceived nostalgia award wrenched from the rancid prostates of senile, gibbering hippies" ouch!

WEIRD

 What is lg Noble Prize?!

The Ig noble prize is a satiric price, created in 1991 by the scientists to encourage the unusual inventions and discoveries in scientific research. The main goal is to recognize the scientists that the Nobel Committee failed to foresee and thus the Pun Ig Nobel, meaning ignoble

Naming Increases Productivity

Great things and weird things happens in India but naming the cows the own is not weird in-fact it is common and can be seen all over the country and yes, they are treated as family but,

Researchers in UK conducted a research with the same similar difference, they started raising cows with and without names. When the cows started to produce milk, the ones that are named seemed to be more productive than the unnamed. According to the research, named cows yielded about 500 pints/liters than the unnamed. This is a proven discovery to the world and yet it has been followed by the Indian Ancestors for a longer run. A bit weird, not on the research but on winning the award.

Catherine Bertenshaw and Peter Rowlinson  works at new castle university received their honorable Ig noble prize in 2009 in the category of veterinary.

An Applause can arrest you!!

Belarus president Alexander Lukashenko declared that applauding in public could lead to a arrest. This was done to promote peace.

He also received a lg noble prize for implementing this rule. This rule was implemented after a protest was formed against him by applauding. The fun fact is, police arrested a man on July 2011 who applauded in public and the government had a witnessed person to prove it. Based on this true event the police team and the president of Belarus have been nominated in 2013.

This turned their citizens to work naked in office and driving out more protests. As of now the problem persists in Belarus. Yup, too weird!

The inventions they made, the discoveries they found, the efforts they put and the knowledge they gained all had it's initial point as an imagination or a curiosity or a doubt and they all won their Nobel Prize by their determination and sacrifice they made. True, some recognition's were unexpected and has its conflict but it weighs more than a mere information. The morale we should take from here, is to set your mind on what you what and make your achievement a story that worth saying.

Never think that you need motivation to reach because it can be found from within, all you need to know is to where to look. The greatest minds were once seen as a fool for what they believed and praised by the same. Let the others see you as a fool but don't let them to be true.

"Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life's coming attractions" -- Albert Einstein.
